At five years old, Chewie met and became friends with Darrell and Danny. Eight years later, in 1985, he joined the group on New Year’s Eve as part of a three-man, member addition—along with Tim and Darrell— literally expanding the six-member group to nine members over night. Since then, his combinations of classic and original mountain licks have helped define the Waymaster sound. Learning to sing bass early on while singing with the other boys in their own quartet, Chewie is now the group’s primary baritone singer. He also plays an array of instruments, but his main pickin' duties are lead guitar, mandolin, and rhythm guitar.
“I love playing with these guys,” he says. “We're definitely a family. We pray, play, and praise together.”
